Don’t Fall Into the Trap Of Double Glazing Cowboys! Most don’t offer warranties on their products!
When considering double glazing for your wooden windows, beware of industry cowboys and inferior products and services.
Here’s Why
The Moisture Trap
No matter what you or your window company does, water will find its way inside your window glazing rebate. With timber windows, even a small amount of moisture can be disastrous. Water will not only rot the timber but also cause the double glazed unit itself to fail (Without a warranty)
The Common Installation Mistake
Often, window installers place the double glazed unit into a square rebate and seal it with a commonly used silicone sealant. Initially, this seems to work, and your timber joinery appears safe. However, over time, problems arise as water becomes trapped.
The Slow Deterioration
Because the double glazed unit is sitting in a square rebate, it becomes vulnerable to moisture pooling in the rebate. Water vapour then begins rotting the timber and saturating the seal. The moisture pulls contaminants out of the silicone sealant, resulting in water concentrated with dirt and contaminants. This slowly deteriorates the polysulphide seal of the double glazed unit. Once the seal is damaged, moisture and air enter the unit, leading to that misty look inside the glass.
Poor Installation Practices
Inexperienced installers often secure the unit with a surface-mounted bead that’s siliconed in place. Silicone is incompatible with paint and timber, and the nails used are often galvanised but not correctly filled, leading to rust over time. Additionally, there are numerous other issues:
No Drainage Track
Without a drainage track, the system will leak, units will break down, and frames will rot.
Unmodified Rebates
Rebates need to be modified to provide enough room for the thickness of the unit and prevent moisture accumulation.
Weight Issues
If ropes aren’t reinstalled and weight issues resolved, windows won’t open and are often screwed shut.
Hardware and Sash Issues
The hardware has not been replaced, and the top sash is secured in position with timber blocks under the horns.
No Draft Sealing System
Without proper draft sealing, you wont reduce the noise and your windows will not perform efficiently.
The Risks
These poor installation practices lead to significant problems over time, including rotting timber, failing double glazed units, and compromised window functionality. To avoid these pitfalls, choose a reputable company with experienced installers who use high-quality materials and proper techniques.
WHAT MAKES THERMAWOOD
DIFFERENT?
Our entire system is designed for longevity We Also offer an unbeatable 10 year warranty on workmanship….and Product!
Rebate With A 15-Degree Slope
We don’t stick your double glazed unit into a square rebate and seal it all the way around- trapping it with the very thing that will destroy it. Instead of a square rebate, we use special tooling to create a 15-degree slope underneath the double glazing unit
Patented Drainage System
If moisture gets in, it has to get out! We use a unique drainage system, where every 100 milimeters there is a drainage slot. This enables any moisture to drain out.
Unique Dry Glazing System
Instead of exposing your double glazing to silicone sealant or other similar wet sealing techniques that react with moisture by eating away at the double glazing, we use solid silicone blocks to support the double glazing to form what is known as a dry glazing system.
Compliance and High Standards
Why This Is Important.
At Thermawood, we don’t just meet industry standards, we exceed them. Every double glazing retrofit we install is fully compliant with the AS4666 and AS1288 standards.
But what does that mean for you, and why is it so crucial?
AS4666 (Insulating Glass Units)
This standard ensures that all double-glazed units (IGUs) are designed to last, with strict requirements for durability, thermal insulation, and moisture resistance.
Superior Insulation: Keeps your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer, lowering your energy bills.
Condensation-Free Glass: Properly sealed IGUs prevent condensation buildup between panes, ensuring clear, fog-free windows.
Long-Lasting Performance: Our compliant installations maintain their efficiency for years, protecting your investment.
AS1288 (Glass Installation)
This standard ensures that glass is installed correctly to withstand wind loads, prevent breakages, and ensure structural safety.
Enhanced Safety: Proper installation makes glass more resistant to breakage, protecting your home and family.
Reliability in Harsh Weather: Our installations are built to endure extreme weather, minimizing the risk of failures.
Extended Warranties: Compliance guarantees that your installation is fully covered, unlike non-compliant suppliers who risk voiding warranties.
Why Compliance Matters
Other suppliers and DIY solutions cut corners by ignoring these critical standards to save costs. For instance, Most use square rebates without proper drainage, which is non-compliant with AS4666.
This can lead to moisture getting trapped, causing seal failures, condensation, and ultimately voided warranties from glass suppliers.
The result?
Costly repairs and reduced window lifespan.
By adhering strictly to AS4666 and AS1288, Thermawood ensures:
No Seal Failures: Our patented dry glazing system prevents moisture buildup, extending the life of your windows.
Long-Term Peace of Mind: We back our work with a 10-year warranty that covers both workmanship and materials, providing security that DIY solutions simply can’t match.
